ORLANDO, Fla. — On a warm May morning, Electronic Arts invited reporters and content creators to preview the future of virtual American football.
EA Sports has evolved its vision, no longer seeing itself as just the publisher of Madden NFL, but as the central hub for American football gaming.
The atmosphere at the Orlando office was filled with enthusiasm. Unlike the previous year, where a small group previewed Madden NFL 24 in Redwood City, EA had two major titles to showcase this time, and the energy was undeniable.
For the first time since 2013, EA Sports is set to release two football games in one summer. The first, coming in mid-July, marks the long-awaited return of the college football series, which had been on hold since 2014 due to a lawsuit led by UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon regarding name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights.
With NCAA Football 14 as the last entry in the series, dedicated fans kept the game alive through mods like College Football Revamped. When legal changes allowed athletes to profit from their NIL, it opened the door for EA to bring college football back with *College Football 25*, a game anticipated to be one of the biggest in recent memory. Featuring real player names, images, and likenesses, including stars like Texas QB Quinn Ewers, Colorado’s Travis Hunter, and Michigan RB Donovan Edwards, the game promises authenticity.
The development required meticulous attention to detail, with EA recreating 134 FBS stadiums and traditions, and a production cycle that took triple the time of Madden’s.
