The first day of the Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 auction, held in New Delhi on Sunday, saw eight men’s teams compete in intense bidding to secure top players for their squads. The HIL auctions are spread over three days, with over 550 players up for selection—400 Indian and 150 international athletes. The first two days are dedicated to men’s teams, with the women’s auction on the final day.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh was the most sought-after player, ultimately signed by the Punjab franchise, Soorma Hockey Club. Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers secured Abhishek, while UP Rudras picked up Hardik Singh. Amit Rohidas joined Tamil Nadu Dragons, and Jugraj Singh was acquired by Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers.

Franchises are allowed to build a 24-player squad, including at least 16 Indian players, with a mandatory four juniors, and eight international stars. International goalkeepers were in high demand, with Ireland’s David Harte going to Tamil Nadu Dragons, Germany’s Jean-Paul Danneberg joining Hyderabad Toofans, and the Netherlands’ Pirmin Blaak heading to Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers. Belgium’s Vincent Vanasch signed with Soorma Hockey Club, while India’s Krishan Bahadur Pathak went to Kalinga Lancers.

Returning after seven years, this will be the sixth edition of the Hockey India League. For the first time, a women’s tournament will also be introduced. Both men’s and women’s competitions will run simultaneously, during a period designated exclusively for HIL by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), ensuring top international players are available.

The HIL 2024-25 season will take place from December 28 to February 1, featuring eight men’s and six women’s teams. Matches will be held at two venues: Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi, Jharkhand, and Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, Odisha.
