Songs missing from YouTube and YouTube Music due to expired ‘SESAC’ license.
In the past day, YouTube Music users in the US have noticed songs marked with an exclamation mark that are unplayable and cannot be tapped in the list view. Additionally, a fullscreen Now Playing error message reads: “Song unavailable – This video contains content from SESAC. It is not available in your country.”
On the main YouTube app, there are no prior warnings, and while music videos can be opened, the same error message then appears in the player.
SESAC “represents the copyrighted musical works of songwriters and publishers, as well as their rights under Copyright Law to publicly perform those works in businesses. In essence, whenever music is performed, played, or broadcast publicly, a license from the copyright owner is necessary.”
