Kyle Shanahan provides a more concerning update on Christian McCaffrey’s injury.

San Francisco 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey’s situation has worsened, as head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that McCaffrey is dealing with Achilles tendinitis in both legs. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco shared the update on the “49ers Talk Podcast,” adding more complexity to McCaffrey’s injury. Originally believed to be dealing with tendinitis in just one Achilles, this new development

“He’s had it in both legs for a while,” Shanahan said. “It likely started in one, and then he overcompensated, which affected the other. However, it’s primarily one leg that’s been bothering him. But he’s dealt with tendinitis in both.”

It remains uncertain whether McCaffrey has been quietly managing tendinitis in both legs for some time or if this is a recent issue. Either way, it’s an unfortunate situation as the 49ers look to bounce back after their Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last season.

Taking their time

The 49ers have no intention of rushing McCaffrey back, especially with Jordan Mason proving to be a dependable backup. Mason has excelled in the starting role, ranking second in the league with 447 rushing yards in just four games, which has given the team confidence in their running game without McCaffrey.

Shanahan also confirmed that McCaffrey will begin physical therapy this week, gradually increasing his activity with the aim of getting him off the Injured Reserve list.

This update comes after McCaffrey’s trip to Germany to consult an Achilles specialist, raising more questions about the severity and timeline of his recovery.complicates the team’s plans.
