Vice President Kamala Harris was photographed at her official residence in Washington, D.C., on October 7, 2024, wearing a Gabriela Hearst suit and Tiffany earrings, as styled by Sittings Editor Leslie Fremar. The photoshoot was done by Annie Leibovitz for Vogue’s October 2024 issue.

When Vice President Harris arrived in Ripon, Wisconsin, on October 3, she was greeted by an unseasonably warm day, with the temperature at 71 degrees, practically summer by local standards. Air Force Two landed, and Harris headed to Ripon College for a rally in the city of just under 8,000 people—a historically significant place, as the Republican Party was founded there in 1854. Despite this, Harris saw Ripon as a fitting destination for her campaign, which aims to offer a calm alternative to the turbulence of her opponent’s approach.

Within an hour, Liz Cheney, former Wyoming congresswoman and Republican Conference chair, and daughter of a former vice president, would take the stage to endorse Harris—a remarkable moment, as Cheney had never voted for a Democratic presidential candidate. Before the rally, Harris and I sat down for an interview in the student union basement. Two chairs were arranged facing each other, with flags positioned between them. Aides meticulously adjusted the setting, the precision and calmness of American political power on full display. As photographers took their places and aides checked last-minute details, the sense of entering high-level talks became almost tangible.
