Joy For Nigerian Youths As Peace Corps Bill Gets Fresh Attention – Nigerians are hopeful that signing the Nigeria Peace Corps bill will result in the removal of many unemployed people from the streets. This comes amid debates about the country’s unemployment rate. The National Bureau of data (NBS) recently announced troubling unemployment data, emphasizing the need of the Peace Corps Bill.
The unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in the first quarter (Q1) of 2023. President Buhari received a number of measures for his approval before leaving office on May 29, 2023, including the well-known Nigeria Peace Corps bill.
Senator Ali Ndume introduced this law to legitimize the founding of the Peace Corps as a government organization, providing legal legitimacy to all serving members of the Nigerian Peace Corps.
The Peace Corps, founded by Dickson Akoh, has tirelessly promoted peace-building and youth development initiatives across the country.
Nonetheless, the organization has faced difficulties as a result of its lack of legal standing and recognition as a government parastatal.
President Buhari’s rejection of the measure in 2018 was a watershed moment in its history. His concerns included national security issues as well as the financial strain of maintaining the organization.
Nonetheless, the bill was revived in the 9th Senate, raising hopes that it would finally receive the necessary consent.
However, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has failed to remark on the pending law since taking office.
